Where Is the VIN Number on My Car?

Five places to check on most cars, vans and motorbikes, plus what to do if you cannot find it.

Bottom of the windscreen

Look from outside through the bottom corner of the windscreen, on the passenger or driver side. Many cars have a small plate on the dashboard with the VIN.

Driver door pillar sticker

Open the driver door and check the pillar. A sticker or plate often shows the VIN alongside tyre pressures and weights.

Engine bay or under the front seat

The VIN is often stamped into the body in the engine bay, or into the floor under the front seat, sometimes under a small flap in the carpet.

V5C logbook, section E

The VIN is printed in section E of the V5C.

Vans and motorbikes

On motorbikes, check the steering head on the frame. On vans, look on the bulkhead as well as the door pillar.
